NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Bates men's track and field turned in six All-NESCAC performances and the 4x100 relay team broke the school record in the event, highlighting the NESCAC Championships Friday and Saturday for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats scored 84 points as a team, good for sixth place and just one point behind fifth-place Bowdoin.Â
Senior captain
Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) was responsible for four All-NESCAC performances by himself, taking second in the shot put (50-0 / 15.24m), second in the hammer throw (180-3 / 54.95m), second in the javelin (170-11 / 52.09m), and third in the discus (139-0 / 42.37m).
Junior
Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) was the NESCAC runner-up in the 1,500 meters, racing to the finish in 3:56.96. And the 4x800 relay team of sophomore
Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), first-year
Jackson Monz (North Logan, Utah), sophomore
Calvin Capelle (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), and senior
Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.) raced to the finish in 7:56.86, good for third place and All-NESCAC honors.Â

Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) did not quite get All-NESCAC honors, finishing fourth. But they did rewrite the Bates record books, racing to the finish in 42.04 seconds. This breaks the previous program record of 42.17 seconds, set back in 2005.
Other top-eight performances for Bates on Friday and Saturday:
- Sophomore Matthew Hamilton (Sudbury, Mass.) competed in the high jump on Friday and took fourth with a top leap of 6-2.75 (1.90m).
- Shen took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.09 seconds, after running the fastest prelim in the field, clocking in at a personal record 10.88 seconds, the third fastest 100-meter dash in program history.
- Stakun-Pickering finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in a personal record non-wind aided time of 22.10 seconds.Â
- Griffin and senior Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio) both scored in the 400 meters, with Griffin taking seventh in 49.72 seconds and Ackley finishing eighth in a personal record time of 49.83 seconds.
- Rooney placed eighth in the 1,500 meters in 4:01.27.
- Senior Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) finished eighth in the 5,000 meters in 14:40.75.
- Senior captain Ryan Smith (Westport, Conn.) took seventh in the 10,000 meters in 31:41.74.
- The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.), Griffin, first-year Evan Migdole (Westbrook, Conn.), and Ackley finished in eighth place in 3:26.24.
- Junior Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) took fourth in the shot put with a top heave of 46-11.5 (14.31m) and sixth in the hammer with a top throw of 155-4 (47.35m).
- Junior James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.) finished fourth in the discus with a top effort of 134-0 (40.85m).
The Bobcats are back in action this Friday and Saturday at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships, hosted by Springfield College.
