Swim teams overwhelm Wheaton in season-opener

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates swimming and diving teams won nearly every event Saturday in a dominating performance against Wheaton College as the Bobcats swept their season-opening dual meet at Tarbell Pool. Bates women's swimming outscored Wheaton 160-57 while the men's team won 159-45.

The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday when they host Wesleyan for a dual meet at 1 p.m.

Women's Highlights
  • Sophomore Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.), junior Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine), senior Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.), and senior captain Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.35. Meanwhile, the Bates 'B' relay team of first-year Caroline Tyrrell (Acton, Mass.), sophomore Elena Trundy (Bath, Maine), senior McKayla Kendall (Bangor, Maine), and first-year Lily Dunn (New Canaan, Conn.) finished ahead of the Wheaton 'A' team, taking second place in 1:49.71.
  • Junior Cora Zuwallack (East Falmouth, Mass.) led a 1-2 finish for Bates in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:51.59. First-year Lauren Ahearn (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was the runner-up in 11:03.43.
  • First-year Amelia Tovey (Sevenoaks, England) led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 200-yard freestyle with her winning time of 2:01.02. Senior captain Lily Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) was the runner-up in 2:01.08.
  • Burke, Trundy, and Tyrrell took the top three spots in the 200-yard IM, with Burke winning in 2:15.07.
  • Burke, Kendall, and Ahearn swept the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with Burke picking up another victory by touching the wall in 59.36 seconds.
  • Dunn, Rosman, and sophomore Taylor Rolefson (Piedmont, Calif.) grabbed the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Dunn winning in 53.96 seconds.
  • Erin Barisonek, Tyrrell, and senior Sarah Teng (Cherry Hill, N.J.) were the top three finishers in the 100-yard backstroke, with Barisonek winning in 1:00.75.
  • Palmer led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in an NCAA 'B" cut time of 1:03.94. Trundy was the runner-up in 1:10.38.
  • Zuwallack won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.60.
  • Dunn, first-year Katherine Reed (Wenham, Mass.), Kendall, and Rolefson won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:40.78. Once again the 'B' relay team, this one comprised of Erin Barisonek, Palmer, first-year Paige Schedler (Potomac Falls, Va.) and Lily Barisonek, finished ahead of the Wheaton 'A' relay team, touching the wall in 1:43.58 to finish in second place.
Men's Highlights
  • Senior Kyle Beebe (Chatham, N.J.), senior captain Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and junior John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.44. Bates relay teams dominated, as senior Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine), senior Kailer Tom (Daly City, Calif.), first-year Peter Morris (Wayland, Mass.), and sophomore Eyton Ng (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took second in 1:36.31 and sophomore Zach White (Santa Barbara, Calif.), junior Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine), first-year Will Trotman (Ridgefield, Conn.), and sophomore Alex Brann (Atlanta, Ga.) finished third in 1:37.19.
  • Sophomore Anton Kondratyev (Belle Mead, N.J.) led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 10:12.91. Senior Matthew Kunkiewicz (Hillsborough, N.J.) placed second in 10:13.70 while first-year Luke Di Fabio (Halfmoon, N.Y.) took third in 10:15.42.
  • Weigel led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:43.72. Friedlander was runner-up in 1:47.03.
  • Senior captain Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) won the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 20.31 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 45.27 seconds.
  • Sophomore Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.) led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 200-yard IM, winning the race in 1:56.85. Trotman took second in 2:00.95.
  • Oppenheim, Trotman, and Brann went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard butterfly, with Oppenheim winning in 50.72 seconds.
  • Weigel won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.41 seconds.
  • Somridhivej, Tom, and Katz went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Somridhivej winning in 55.50 seconds.
  • Friedlander won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.26.
  • Oppenheim, Somridhivej, Pierce, and Cory won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.04.
