Bates Swimming and Diving Welcomes Tom Jansen to Staff

LEWISTON, Maine - Tom Jansen has joined the Bates College swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach and Aquatics & Pool Operation Manager, announced today by head coach Peter Casares.

Jansen arrives at Bates following two seasons as lead assistant coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving programs, bringing collegiate coaching, recruiting and aquatics operations experience to Lewiston. At CMS, Jansen designed training plans for distance swimmers, provided on-deck coaching and video analysis, managed recruiting and assisted with team operations.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Tom to the program and have him hit the ground running," Casares said. "His experience as both a coach and swimmer will allow him to connect with our student-athletes while helping us continue our climb at the conference and national levels. He is a tireless worker and goal-oriented individual who aligns perfectly with our vision for excellence in the classroom and in the pool. I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together."

In addition to his coaching duties at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Jansen served as aquatics manager from 2025-26. He oversaw a staff of 20 lifeguards and was responsible for scheduling, facility coordination and safety compliance, experience that will translate directly to his aquatics and pool operations responsibilities at Bates.

Prior to his time at CMS, Jansen spent the 2023-24 season as lead assistant coach at Occidental College. He contributed to recruiting, practice planning, meet lineups and race strategy while coordinating equipment, travel and other team operations. Jansen also served a two-week stint as interim head coach, overseeing the program's training and operations.

During Jansen's collegiate coaching career, the programs he has worked with have produced two NCAA Division III individual national champions, along with numerous All-America performances, conference champions and program records. His additional coaching experience includes work with swimming programs and camps at the University of Maryland, Kenyon College, Claremont High School and several club, masters and community programs.

Jansen earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Redlands in 2022 and completed a human resources certificate in 2023. He is a Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor and holds certifications in lifeguarding, CPR/AED for professional rescuers and first aid.
