BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's indoor track and field team took back the Maine State Meet championship with a strong performance Saturday at Bowdoin's Farley Field House.
The meet came down to the wire but the Bobcats clinched their fifth indoor state title in the last six years thanks to a victory in the famed 4x800 "Blackout" relay.
Bates tallied 206 points, good for first place out of eight teams and nine points ahead of runner-up Bowdoin.
Meet Highlights
- The 4x800 relay team of sophomore Callahan Porter (Chester, N.J.), first-year Max Hoffman (Wellesley, Mass.), senior Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and junior Ross Tejeda (Milton, Mass.) secured the win in a time of 8:09.08, nearly 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Saint Joseph's.
- First-year Nate Roberts (Summit, N.J.) won the 800 meters in 1:54.27, good for a Maine State Meet record and eighth on the Bates all-time performance list, as the Bobcats took five of the top six spots in the race.
- Senior Andrew Mottur (Rumford, R.I.) won the 5,000 meters in a personal record time of 15:12.84.
- Sophomore Matt Charpentier (Cape Neddick, Maine) won the Al Nicholson shot put with a top effort of 47-11.75 (14.62m).
- The Bobcats took the top three spots in the Peter Doran weight throw, with senior Solomon Sakakeeny-Smith (Boston) winning the event with a personal-record effort of 54-6 (16.61m). Charpentier was the runner-up with a personal-record mark of 52-3.75 (15.94m) and first-year Ryan Glaser (Rockport, Maine) took third, also setting a personal record with his heave of 50-11 (15.52m).
- Senior Calvin Capelle (Laguna Beach, Calif.) placed second in the Warren Randall 600 meters in 1:23.18, good for sixth on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Sophomore Seneca Moore (Lansing, Mich.) placed second in the Al Harvie 60-meter hurdles in 8.33 seconds.
- First-year Nick Nicolazzo IV (Wellesley, Mass.) took second in the high jump with a personal record leap of 6-0.75 (1.85m).
- Sophomore Eli Terrell (Barrington, R.I.) grabbed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 21-8 (6.60m), tied for 10th on the Bates all-time performance list.
The Bobcats head to Boston University next Friday for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
