MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's swimming and diving team edged No. 18 Wheaton (Mass.) in team scoring by winning the final relay, as both they and the Bobcat men's team swept their tri-meet with Wheaton and NESCAC rival and host Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Bates men outscored Wesleyan 183-108 and Wheaton 212-72, while first place on the women's side was decided by the final race of the day, with Bates' edging Wheaton in the 200-yard freestyle relay 1:37.41 to 1:37.62. The Bates women outscored Wesleyan 206-93, and edged Wheaton 151-147.
"An amazing meet," said head coach
Peter Casares. "The men's team dominated and had some outstanding swims. The women were down by a point and the A relay had to win to win the meet. They stepped up with some of the best relay starts I've ever seen to take the win. They stepped up and had some magic tonight."
Bates Men's Highlights
- The Bates men's team began the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, with the winning team of junior Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine), junior Nate Sommer (Terre Haute, Ind.), senior Andrew Hall (Little Silver, N.J.) and senior Pieter Cory (Dublin, Calif.) finishing in 1:34.29.
- First-year Jaewoo Kim (San Ramon, Calif.) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.74) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.65).
- Junior Edmond Giang (Wayland, Mass.) won the 100-yard butterfly (51.57) and placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.44).
- Berry also captured first place in the 100-yard backstroke (52.46).
- Sommmer also won the 100-yard breaststroke (59.07) and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.65)
- Cory took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.80).
- Hall placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.17), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.62) and the 200-yard IM (1:59.38).
- Junior John Marcolina (Mystic, Conn.) placed second in the 50 freestyle (22.10).
- Sophomore Ethan Bean (Oakton, Va.) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:12.59).
- Senior Dan Waterland (Chadds Ford, Pa.) finished second in the 200-yad backstroke (2:00.00) and third in the 100 backstroke (53.79)
- Sophomore Dylan Nordstrom (Pelham, N.Y.) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.12).
- Sophomore Mark Gregory (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed third in the 1,000 free (10:27.20).
- Senior captain Jack Johnson (Brewster, Mass.) finished third in both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.72) and the 200 breast (2:15.26).
- Senior Chris Draper (Armonk, N.Y.) placed third in the 100-yard freestyle (48.76).
- Senior Kyle Jorgensen (Lawrenceville, N.J.) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.06).
- First-year Jack Mocarski (Fairfield, Conn.) took third place in the 500 freestyle (4:59.42).
Bates Women's Highlights
- Sophomore Amelia Wallis (Norwich, Vt.) was first out of nine competitors in both 3-meter (222.52) and 1-meter (210.45) points.
- First-year Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.98 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.00, and also placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.23).
- Sophomore Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.09) and was second in the 100 butterfly (59.42).
- Sophomore Julia Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:47.97 and placd second in the 500 free (5:16.04).
- Sophomore Natalie Young (Windham, N.H.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:11.81, took second place in the 200-yard invidual medley (2:12.45) and placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.50).
- Senior Maya Reynoso Williams (Somerville, Mass.) placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.33) and third in the 500 free (5:19.84).
- First-year Sophia Carrai (Eugene, Ore.) placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.32) and third in the 100 free (55.10).
- Senior captain Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) took third place in the 200 freestyle (1:58.99).
- Junior Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.) took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.58).
- Senior Saskia Wong-Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed third n the 200 butterfly (2:17.00).
- Senior Isabel Mohammadi-Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.18).
- Juniro Alicia Meshulam (Brookline, Mass.) placed third in 1-meter diving (204.97).
- Clinching the team win in the 200 free relay with the first-place finish were Gibbons, sophomore Marjorie McLeod (Durham, Maine), Carrai and Wenger.
"I was really proud of the energy and effort today," said Casares. "To see the men take charge of their events was a good sign of their confidence. The women's team coming down to the last race, against a better ranked team, showed us not only tremendous fight, but also that the Bobcat magic is still there!"
Bates will next compete in the Maine State Meet Dec. 3-4 at Colby.
