BOSTON -- Senior captain
Truman Williams continued his record-breaking campaign and the Bates men's track and field team placed fifth at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at the TRACK at New Balance.
The Bobcats tallied 57 points as a team, fifth-most out of 32 schools, and ahead of rivals Bowdoin (49 points) and Colby (44.66 points).
Meet Highlights
- Williams (Montclair, N.J.) raced to the finish in the 600 meters in 1:19.90, good for third place out of 33 competitors. His time broke the previous school record of 1:21.14, set in 2013 by James LePage '13. Meanwhile, senior Calvin Capelle (Laguna Beach, Calif.) took ninth in 1:21.59, good for third on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Junior Ross Tejeda (Milton, Mass.) took second in the mile in 4:09.01 and senior captain Andrew Mottur (Rumford, R.I.) also scored for the Bobcats, taking eighth in 4:17.59
- The Distance Medley Relay team of sophomore Callahan Porter (Chester, N.J.), sophomore Ryan Harding (Wellesley, Mass.), senior Cam Stathos (Wellesley, Mass.), and first-year Max Hoffman (Wellesley, Mass.) earned runner-up honors in 10:04.72.
- Sophomore Matt Charpentier (Cape Neddick, Maine) placed second in the shot put with a top heave of 51-5.5 (15.68m).
- Senior Solomon Sakakeeny-Smith (Boston) set a personal record in the 35-pound weight throw with his toss of 55-11.25 (17.05m), good for third place at the meet.
- Sophomore Nathaniel Aronson (West Hartford, Conn.), senior Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), junior captain Jackson Monz (Logan, Utah), and Tejeda placed fourth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 7:46.65, good for 10th on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Williams was fourth in the 400 meters in 48.37 seconds and Harding moved into eighth on the Bates all-time performance list in the event with his time of 50.11 seconds.
- Hoffman placed sixth in the 3,000 meters in 8:23.04, good for third on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Harding, sophomore Evan Berthiaume (East Greenwich, R.I.), Capelle, and Williams teamed up to take sixth place in the 4x400 relay in 3:18.92.
- First-year Nate Roberts (Summit, N.J.) took seventh in the 1,000 meters in 2:31.64.
- Senior captain Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.) placed eighth in the 60-meter dash in a personal-record time of 6.98 seconds.
- Mottur set a personal record in the 5,000 meters, grabbing eighth place in 14:46.58.
- Rooney moved up to third on the Bates all-time performance list in the 800 meters, taking 10th place at New Englands with his personal-record time of 1:53.34.
Select Bobcats will head to Medford, Mass. next Saturday to compete in the Tufts "Last Chance" Meet as they attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
