LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates swimming and diving teams remained undefeated on the young season with a sweep of Wesleyan Saturday in a dual meet at Tarbel Pool. The men's team dominated the Cardinals by a count of 166.5 to 47.5 points while the women's team pulled out a nail-biter, winning 126-111.
The Bobcats are back in action Dec. 5-6 when they head to Waterville for the Maine Collegiate Invite.Â
Men's Highlights
- The Bates 400-yard medley relay team of senior Kyle Beebe (Chatham, N.J.), senior captain Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and senior captain Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) took first place with their time of 3:22.09. Meanwhile, the 'C' relay team of sophomore Alex Brann (Atlanta), junior John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa), sophomore Eyton Ng (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and first-year Jacob Sutherland (Menlo Park, Calif.) pulled off a surprise by grabbing second in 3:35.35, out-touching the Bates 'B' relay team by the slimmest of margins, as they checked in with a time of 3:35.36...still four seconds faster than the Wesleyan 'A' relay team.
- Sophomore Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.) led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 200-yard freestyle, grabbing first in 1:45.31. First-year Peter Morris (Wayland, Mass.) placed second in 1:51.09.
- The Bobcats grabbed the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, with Cory winning in 20.48 seconds. Senior Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) took second in 21.55 seconds and senior Kailer Tom (Daly City, Calif.) finished third in 21.80 seconds.
- Weigel led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 200-yard IM with his time of 1:54.79 while Friedlander placed second in 2:02.24.
- Friedlander placed first in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.82 and first-year Will Trotman (Ridgefield, Conn.) grabbed second in 1:57.69.
- Pierce, Ng, and Morris went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 48.24, 48.55, and 49.08, respectively.
- Senior Matthew Kunkiewicz (Hillsborough, N.J.) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.72 and Beebe took second in 2:04.43.
- Oppenheim, Somridhivej, and Tom went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Oppenheim winning in 2:05.91.
- Sophomore Anton Kondratyev (Belle Mead, N.J.)Â won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.85.
- Oppenheim, Somridhivej, junior Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine), and Tom won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:23.81. All four Bates relay teams out-touched the top Wesleyan relay team.
Women's Highlights
- The Bates 400-yard medley team of sophomore Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.), junior Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine), senior Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.), and first-year Lily Dunn (New Canaan, Conn.) took first place in 3:55.54.
- Dunn led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 50-yard freestyle, winning in 24.92 seconds. Sophomore Taylor Rolefson (Piedmont, Calif.) took second in 25.56 seconds and Palmer came in third in 25.60 seconds.
- Sophomore Kendall Keshen (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 200-yard IM, winning in 2:13.15. Senior captain Lily Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) took second in 2:16.31 and senior McKayla Kendall (Bangor, Maine) grabbed third in 2:18.15.
- Burke won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.72.
- Palmer won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:21.47.
- Junior Cora Zuwallack (East Falmouth, Mass.) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:19.14 and first-year Lauren Ahearn (Scottsdale, Ariz.) took second in 5:23.76.
- The meet came down to the final relay and the Bates 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dunn, Rolefson, Keshen, and senior captain Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) emerged victorious in 1:39.17.
