Women's track and field finishes one point ahead of USM for first among D3 teams at Bates Invite

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's indoor track and field team managed to outscore the University of Southern Maine by one point to take second place overall, and first place among Division III schools at the Bates Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Merrill Gymnasium. 

The Bobcats finished with 124.5 points, enough for second place out of eight schools, while the Huskies finished with 123.5 points. NCAA Division I program University of New Hampshire won the meet with 304.5 points.

Meet Highlights
  • First-year Campbell Johnson (Naples, Maine) finished second in the triple jump with a top effort of 35-1.75 (10.71m), good for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list. Johnson also took second in the high jump with a top clearance of 5-1.25 (1.56m).
  • Junior Gabby Monaco (Pittsburgh, Pa.), first-year Madison Alves (Stoneham, Mass.), sophomore Alannah Ardrey (New York City), and Johnson placed second in the 4x200 relay in 1:50.75.
  • Senior Isabelle Demeritt (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore Leah White (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took second and third respectively in the mile, with Demeritt crossing the finish line in 5:24.89 and White recording a personal record time of 5:27.08.
  • Junior captain Carli Ciavarelli (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished second in the 20-pound weight throw with a top effort of 54-4.5 (16.57m).
  • Sophomore Lia Traficonte (Cumberland, Maine) finished third in the 400 meters in 1:01.65.
  • Junior Evelyn Marchand (Trumbull, Conn.) took third in the 600 meters with a personal record time of 1:43.98.
  • Senior Rosie McKerley (Coventry, Conn.) finished tied for third in the pole vault with a top clearance of 8-8.25 (2.65m).
  • Sophomore Emily Cain (Burien, Wash.) finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 8.12 seconds while Alves finished fifth in 8.13 seconds, good for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list.
  • Alves took third in the 200-meter dash in 27.10 seconds.
  • First-year Juno Rogers (Decatur, Ga.) finished third in the pentathlon with a point total of 2,774.
The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Boston to compete in Middlebury's Small College Invitational, to be held at the TRACK at new balance.
