Men's 4x800 relay wins regional title, Bobcats place third at New Englands

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bates 4x800 relay team won the regional title on Saturday and men's track and field placed third out of 36 scoring teams over the course of two days at the New England Outdoor Division III Championships. 

The Bobcats scored 60 points as a team, tops among NESCAC schools and trailing only MIT and UMASS Dartmouth. 

Saturday highlights:
  • The 4x800 relay team of sophomore Calvin Capelle (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), first-year Jackson Monz (North Logan, Utah), junior Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.), and sophomore Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) won their race in 7:50.30, more than two seconds faster than the runner-ups from Plymouth State.

  • Farrington surged up the Bates all-time performance list in the 1,500 meters, taking third at New Englands with his time of 3:51.92, the fifth fastest mark in Bates history.

  • Rooney wasn't far behind Farrington in the 1,500, placing fifth in 3:52.50, the sixth fastest time in Bates history. 

  • After placing second on Friday in the hammer throw, senior captain Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) took fourth in the discus on Saturday with a top effort of 147-04 (44.91m) and fifth in the shot put with a personal-record heave of 51-6.25 (15.70m). 

  • The 4x100 relay team of senior Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.), sophomore Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Aydan Gedeon-Hope (Norton, Mass.), and senior captain Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) placed fourth in 42.59 seconds, the seventh fastest time in Bates history. 

  • The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.), senior Robby Griffin (Norwell, Mass.), first-year Evan Migdole (Westbrook, Conn.), and senior Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio) also finished in fourth place with their time of 3:21.63. 

  • Ackley shined in the 400 meters, taking seventh place in 49.32 seconds, the ninth fastest mark in Bates history. 

  • Junior Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) finished eighth in the shot put with a top effort of 48-8.75 (14.85m). 
The Bobcats are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Open New England Championships, hosted by Northeastern University.
