Men's track and field opens outdoor season with first-place finish at Bates Quad Meet

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's track and field team opened the outdoor season with an impressive victory in the Bates Quad Meet on Saturday, scoring an even 100 points and winning 11 events. 

The 100 points scored by Bates was 37 more than runner-up Bowdoin.

A few Bobcats landed on the program's top 10 all-time performance list in their respective events. Junior Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 5,000 meters, winning in a career-best time of 14:40.72, the 10th fastest outdoor 5K in Bates history. Senior Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) finished runner-up to Farrington in 14:46.36.

The 4x100 relay team of senior Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.), sophomore Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.), and senior captain Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) won their race in 42.75 seconds, the ninth fastest time in Bates history. 

Senior captain Ryan Smith (Westport, Conn.) set a new personal record on his way to winning the 10K in 30:46.79, still sixth on the Bates all-time performance list. 

Additional Meet Highlights
  • Stakun-Pickering won the 100 meters in 11.06 seconds and the 200 meters in 22.25 seconds. O'Connor finished runner-up in the 100 meters in a personal record time of 11.16 seconds.
  • Senior Robby Griffin (Norwell, Mass.) won the 400 meters in 50.16 seconds and took fourth in the 200 meters in a personal record time of 22.81 seconds.
  • Sophomore Matthew Hamilton (Sudbury, Mass.) won the high jump with a personal record leap of 6-2.75 (1.90m).
  • Junior Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) won the shot put with a top heave of 46-7.5 (14.21m) and took second in both the discus (126-6) and the hammer (personal record 155-6).
  • Senior captain Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) won a trio of events, taking first place in the hammer (171-11), discus (143-6), and the javelin (164-5), while finishing second to Goff in the shot put (45-6.25).
  • Junior James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.) tossed the hammer a personal record 151-4 (46.12m), good for third place behind teammates Byrne and Goff. 
  • Senior Luke Urribarri (East Sandwich, Mass.) finished runner-up to Byrne in the javelin with a top throw of 154-2 (46.99m).
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday at RPI to take on the Engineers, Bowdoin, and Tufts.
