BOSTON -- The distance medley relay team raced to second place and Bates men's track and field sits in third out of 19 scoring teams Friday after the conclusion of the first day of competition at the New England Division III Indoor Championships.
The Bobcats scored 20 points as a team, eight points back of second-place Williams, and 12 back of first-place MIT, with Saturday's events still to come. Bates is four points ahead of fourth-place Connecticut College and seven points ahead of fifth-place Amherst.

Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), senior
Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio), first-year
Jackson Monz (North Logan, Utah), and junior
Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) combined for a time of 9:59.32 in the distance medley relay, the ninth fastest DMR in Bates history. They finished second out of 21 schools in the race, just behind the Ephs.Â

Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) and junior
James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.) both scored in the weight throw for Bates. Byrne took second place with a top heave of 57-8.25 (17.58m) and Guinee came in seventh with his top throw of 52-8.25 (16.06m).Â

Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) rounded out the scoring for Bates on the day with his seventh place finish in the 5K. It was a personal record time of 14:35.08 for Boesch Dining, good for third place on the Bates all-time performance list.Â
Elsewhere, senior
Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.) advanced to Saturday's 60-meter dash finals by winning his heat in 7.01 seconds.Â
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday at 11:30am as they look to finish among the top three teams in New England.Â
