Women's rowing sweeps their races as Bobcats prevail by one point over the runner-up Mules

GREENE, Maine -- The men's varsity four fought hard to take second place in the final race of the day, securing the President's Cup for the host Bobcats as the Bates rowing program won their annual home regatta over rivals Colby and Bowdoin for a 13th consecutive year.

It was a tight battle, as the Bobcats tallied 23 points and the runner-up Mules recorded 22 points. Bowdoin took third with eight points.

Led by junior coxswain Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and senior captain stroke seat Luke Desmaison (New York City), the men's first varsity four had to get at least second place in their four-boat race. The Bobcats crossed the finish line of the 1900-meter course on the Androscoggin River in 6:43.9, holding off third-place Bowdoin by one second (6:44.9) for second place. While a club program, Bowdoin specializes in the fours, so it was a strong result for the Bobcats. Colby won the race in 6:40.4 but if the Bobcats had finished third instead of second, the Mules and Bobcats would have shared the President's Cup. Instead, Bates won it outright yet again.

Colby won all the men's races on Sunday while the Bobcats prevailed in every women's race.

Led by sophomore coxswain Leah Brody (Larchmont, N.Y.) and sophomore stroke seat Virginia Adams (Hanover, N.H.), the women's first varsity eight won the first race of the day, crossing the finish line in 6:54.1. Colby came in second in 7:00.7 while Bowdoin took third in 7:19.5.

The women's second varsity eight completed their undefeated weekend, following up their victory over MIT on Saturday with an open-water victory on Sunday. Led by sophomore coxswain Shoshana Levy (Arlington, Va.) and junior stroke seat Charlotte Comrack (Washington, D.C.), the Bobcats raced to the finish in 7:05.7. Colby took runner-up in 7:12.6 and Bowdoin placed third in 7:27.2.

The closest race of the day on the women's side turned out to be the third varsity eight, as first-year coxswain Sophie Shaw (Great Barrington, Mass.) and sophomore stroke seat Evie Fox (Dallas, Texas) led the Bobcats to victory in 7:10.5. Bowdoin helped the Bobcats out by taking second place in the race, finishing in 7:12.0. Meanwhile, the Bates fourth varsity eight finished third in 7:26.6, well-ahead of last-place Colby (7:40.3).

Brody and junior stroke seat Maggie Gill (Port Clyde, Maine) helped round out the undefeated day for the women's team by leading the varsity four to victory in 7:32.2. Colby was second once more, crossing the finish line in 7:39.1, with Bowdoin and the University of Maine a distant third and fourth, respectively.

The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday as both teams will compete at the New England Rowing Championship, held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
