LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's rowing team was recognized on Wednesday for their academic excellence as 21 Bobcats were named IRCA Scholar Athletes, as announced by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
In order to be named an IRCA Scholar Athlete, rowers must be in their second year of eligibility, competed in their program's top three boats during the current season or raced at the 2026 IRA Championship, and must have, at least, a 3.50 cumulative GPA through fall semester.
The 21 Bobcats named IRCA Scholar Athletes are: Alex Appleton '27 (White Bear Township, Minn.), coxswain Darien Chiang '27 (Quincy, Mass.), John Cleary '28 (Northampton, Mass.), Louis Consigli '28 (Milford, Mass.), Soren Davidson '26 (Minneapolis, Minn.), team captain Luke Desmaison '26 (New York City), Xavier Drouin '28 (Mobile, Ala.), Peter Gratwick '28 (Oakland Park, Fla.), Finian Guinney '27 (Seattle), Nicholas Hoerle '27 (Osprey, Fla.), Luke Johnson '27 (Lexington, Mass.), Erik Lindholm '27 (Bethesda, Md.), coxswain Sara Maquera '28 (Glenview, Ill.), Hugh McCabe '27 (Arlington, Mass.), Conor McGuckin '26 (New Hope, Pa.), team captain Kelly McKaige '26 (Seattle), Nate Oh '28 (New York City), Thomas Pacinda '28 (Newton, Mass.), Lando Putnam-Bagley '27 (Medford, Mass.), Benji Richards '27 (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.), and team captain coxswain Micah Shimizu '26 (Batavia, Ill.).
Bates men's rowing tied with Williams College for the most IRCA Scholar Athletes among IRA Division III programs. The Bobcats are coming off a strong season that saw them finish fifth in the country at the IRA National Championship. They are currently in England, preparing to compete Saturday in the time trials for the Royal Henley Regatta.
