LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Bates men's Nordic skiing sophomore
Sage Grossi placed 12th out of 93 EISA skiers in the 1.3K freestyle sprint to lead the Bobcats Tuesday at the St. Lawrence Carnival.
Grossi (Montpelier, Vt.) raced to the finish in the qualifier in 2:51.83, earning 30 carnival points for Bates. His time was the 78th fastest overall in the field, as the St. Lawrence Carnival is doubling as the U.S. Cross Country Championships this year. Only two EISA skiers placed in the top 30, which was needed to qualify for the men's quarterfinal heats. The sprints did not count toward qualification for the NCAA Championships.
First-year
Daven Linck (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and sophomore
Oliver Wilson (Dublin, N.H.) rounded out the scoring for the Bobcats, taking 43rd (2:57.53) and 44th (2:57.54) respectively among EISA skiers. Linck picked up 13 carnival points while Wilson earned 12 for Bates.
On the women's side, sophomore
Hannah Grohman (Biddeford, Maine) led the way for Bates, taking 50th out of 93 EISA skiers with her time of 3:39.89. Sophomore
Elsa Sanborn (Burlington, Vt.) placed 56th in 3:42.05, earning 10 carnival points, and fellow classmate
Margaret Voisin (Montpelier, Vt.) rounded out the scoring in 60th place with a time of 3:43.48, enough for nine carnival points.
Combined, the Nordic skiing teams tallied 167.5 carnival points over the course of two days. Final standings at the St. Lawrence Carnival will be determined Jan. 22-23 when the alpine skiing teams compete at Whiteface Mountain.
The Nordic skiing teams are back in action Jan. 23-24 when they head to Quarry Road for the Colby Carnival.
