Men's outdoor track and field wins pair of conference titles at NESCAC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Senior Andrew Mottur won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the Bobcat 4x800 relay team broke the meet record Saturday at the NESCAC Championships, where Bates men's outdoor track and field took seventh place overall out of 11 schools.

Meet Highlights
  • Mottur (Rumford, R.I.) raced to the finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:08.87, winning by nearly four seconds over defending NESCAC champion Zygmund Goddard of Middlebury. He becomes the first Bobcat to win the conference championship in the event since Justin Easter '03 in 2002. With the win, Mottur secures the first conference championship and All-NESCAC honors of his career. He also moves up to fifth on the Bates all-time performance list in the event. Easter holds the school record at 8:54.23, as he twice won the NCAA Division III championship and was a four-time All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mottur currently ranks 19th in the country this year in the event.
  • The Bates 4x800 relay team of junior Ross Tejeda (Milton, Mass.), senior Cam Stathos (Wellesley, Mass.), first-year Nate Roberts (Summit, N.J.), and junior captain Jackson Monz (Logan, Utah) smashed a NESCAC Championships record that had stood since 2016 with their winning time of 7:37.37. The previous mark of 7:41.74 was established nine years ago by Bowdoin. Runner-up Middlebury also broke the previous meet record with their time of 7:39.26 on Saturday. Tejeda was the only returnee from last year's Bates 4x800 relay team that won the conference title in 7:41.80. This year's performance puts Tejeda, Stathos, Roberts, and Monz at second place on the Bates all-time performance list in the event.
  • First-year Ryan Glaser (Rockport, Maine) earned All-NESCAC (top-3) honors with a third-place showing in the hammer throw, delivering a personal-record toss of 166-2 (50.64m) on his first attempt of the day.
  • Sophomore Seneca Moore (Lansing, Mich.) earned All-NESCAC honors with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. He earned a spot in the finals with a time of 15.19 seconds, then capped off his day by crossing the finish line in 14.94 seconds in the final.
  • Tejeda also earned All-NESCAC honors in the 800 meters, placing third with a time of 1:51.36. Roberts finished fifth in 1:52.94, good for eighth on the Bates all-time performance list.
  • The Bates 4x100 relay team of sophomore Evan Berthiaume (East Greenwich, R.I.), senior captain Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Ryan Harding (Wellesley, Mass.), and senior captain Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.) placed fourth in 42.18 seconds, good for fifth on the Bates all-time performance list.
  • The Bates 4x400 relay team of Berthiaume, Harding, senior Calvin Capelle (Laguna Beach, Calif.), and Williams won their section and placed seventh overall in 3:19.96, good for 10th on the Bates all-time performance list.
The Bobcats tallied 54 points as a team, six points ahead of host Wesleyan and just a half point behind sixth-place Colby.

Bates men's outdoor track and field is back in action next weekend at the New England Division III Championships in New London, Conn.
