LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 19 Bates College, entering competition for the first time since Dec. 2, concluded its holiday hiatus Tuesday with a home match vs. #17 William Smith College.

The visiting Herons (3-2) swept all nine contests vs. Bobcats, securing the 9-0 shutout.

Andy Martagon pushed her opponent to five games in the No. 1 position vs. Rafaela Albuja Sanchez. Martagon grabbed the first game by a score of 11-6 before Sanchez swiped the next two, each by a score of 11-9. The Bates senior staved off defeat with an 11-8 victory in game four, but the Heron senior finally sealed the victory with a 12-10 win in game five.

Hollis Hale also went the distance in her outing, eventually succumbing to William Smith's Jessica Finnerty, 3-2, in the No. 9 slot. Dropping the first game, 11-7, Hollis battled back to win the next two by scores of 11-6 and 11-9. Trailing by a 2-1 count, Finnerty managed to take games four and five (11-7, 11-8) and secure the win.

The garnet and white (1-3) returns to action Friday night (6:00 PM) with a match at #14 Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
