RICHMOND, Va. -- Eight Bates women and two Bates men earned Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America this year for their performances in the pool and in the classroom.
To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes earned a minimum GPA of 3.5 and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections also earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.
In addition to the individual Scholar All-Americans, the Bates men's swimming and diving team was honored as a Scholar All-America Team for their winter semester team GPA of 3.73, tied for the fifth highest among NCAA Division III institutions, as well as the highest team GPA in the NESCAC. Meanwhile, the women check in with a team GPA of 3.67.
Bates individual honorees include:
- Junior Nathan Berry (Augusta, Maine), a psychology major and three-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including a sixth-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle.
- First-year Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.), a four-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
- Junior Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.), a biochemistry major and four-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including an 8th place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
- Recently graduated senior Andrew Hall (Little Silver, N.J.), a neuroscience major and All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships with a 13th-place finish in the 200 IM.
- Sophomore Julia Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), the third fastest 1,650-yard freestyle swimmer in Bates history (17:18.47).
- Recently graduated senior Maya Reynoso Williams (Somerville, Mass.), a biology major and All-America performer in the 800-yard freestyle relay at the 2022 NCAA Championships, helping Bates take ninth place in the event.
- Recently graduated senior Suzy Ryckman (Riverside, Conn.), an economics major and three-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including an 8th place showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
- Recently graduated senior captain Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.), a sociology major and two-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including a ninth-place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
- Sophomore Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.), a biochemistry major and a maximum seven-time All-America performer at the 2022 NCAA Championships, including a sixth-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle.
- Sophomore Natalie Young (Windham, N.H.), a neuroscience major and second team selection for her NCAA "B" Cut time of 4:28.70 in the 400-yard IM, the third fastest time in Bates history.
