MEDFORD, Mass. -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team won a pair of five-game matches in an exciting 6-3 win over No. 16 Bowdoin to wrap up the Kurtz Cup on Sunday.
Sophomore first team All-NESCAC selection
Andrea Martagon (Puebla, Mexico) won one of those five-gamers for the Bobcats (7-11), winning a back-and-forth battle with Bowdoin's Amanda Cowhey at the No. 1 position. Martagon dropped the first game, then took the next two. Cowhey took game four before Martagon earned the 3-2 (6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 3-11, 11-7) victory.
The other five-game win for Bates over Bowdoin (11-10) came at the No. 8 position. Junior
Victoria Haghighi (Bronx, N.Y.) rallied from down two games to one to prevail in an epic match by a count of 3-2 (11-5, 3-11, 14-16, 11-6, 14-12) over Bowdoin's Melissa Horan.
Other wins came a little easier for the Bobcats, with first-year
Grace Flaherty (Malvern, Pa.) sweeping her opponent by a count of 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-6) at the No. 4 position and senior
Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) winning 3-1 (14-12, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7) at No. 5.
The bottom of the lineup came up big for Bates. At No. 7, sophomore
Marina McGuire (Cambridge, Mass.) won 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 12-10) over Bowdoin's Marguerite Crowder. Then at No. 9, senior captain
Natalie Bachman (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up a 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-8) victory over Sophie Barber.
Select Bobcats may compete in CSA Individual Nationals, coming up March 4-6 in Philadelphia.
