CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team fell to No. 14 Amherst 7-2 in the NESCAC quarterfinals but bounced back to defeat No. 23 Hamilton in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
With the split, Bates (6-8) earns a spot in the fifth-place match Sunday at 9:30am against No. 18 Bowdoin.
Senior
Natasha Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) and junior
Lucy Moseley (Philadelphia, Pa.) starred for the Bobcats on Saturday, winning both their matches.
Jones defeated Amherst's Isabelle Tilney-Sandberg by a count of 3-1 (11-6, 12-10, 4-11, 11-8) at the No. 5 position in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Moseley won a back-and-forth battle with the Mammoths' Supriya Chang at the No. 9 position, prevailing 3-2 (8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5), which tied the overall match at two games a piece. But Amherst won the remaining five matches to secure the win over Bates.
In the afternoon, Jones went right back to work at No. 5, defeating Hamilton's Madison Sakheim 3-1 (8-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6) for her second win of the day and her fourth straight overall.
Moseley turned in a dominant performance in the afternoon, winning in just 14 minutes, 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-2), over Hamilton's Eleanor Arnold at the No. 9 position.
At the top of the lineup against the Continentals, sophomore
Andrea Martagon (Puebla, Mexico) earned a 3-1 (11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5) win over Sarah Stonestreet. First-year
Grace Flaherty (Malvern, Pa.) and junior
Cordelia Dotson (Houston, Texas) swept aside their opponents at the No. 3 and 6 positions respectively. Flaherty won 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 13-11) over Eleanor Bailey and Dotson won 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-3) over Sydney Soloway.
In addition to Moseley at No. 9, the Bobcats showed off their depth against Hamilton with a 3-1 (7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 12-10) win for first-year
