No. 19 Bobcats Enjoy First Taste of Victory With 6-3 Defeat of No. 29 Connecticut College

Lewiston, Maine -- No. 19 Bates College women's squash enjoyed its first taste of victory in the young season as the Bobcats doubled up No. 29 Connecticut College, 6-3, Saturday afternoon in the Bates Squash Center.

The first six positions for the garnet and white each won their individual matches via shutout, putting the Bobcats at 1-3 on the year. The visiting Camels slip to 1-4 after the setback.

Andy Martagon (Jr.-Puebla, Mexico) enjoyed a clean sweep in the No. 1 position for Bates, defeating Connecticut College's Rachel Matamoros by scores of 11-2, 11-4, and 11-8. Aasya Patel (Fy.-Madhya Pradesh, India), who won her first collegiate match less than 24 hours earlier vs. Georgetown University, made it two in a row with a 3-0 blanking of Ainsley Ellison (11-3, 12-10, 11-2) at the No. 2 spot.

Erika Parker (Sr.-San Salvador, El Salvador),  playing in the No. 3 position, made quick work of Isabel Schumaker with wins of 11-1, 11-2, and 11-4. Grace Flaherty (So.-Malvern, Pa.), followed in the No. 4 slot, winning her match vs. Karen Escalera (11-3, 11-2, 11-3).

Daina Velez (So.-Bronx, N.Y.) moved past Miranda Medina at No. 5 (11-6, 11-9, 11-5) while Abigail Zerbey (Sr.-North Andover, Mass.) completed her match at No. 6 vs. Crystal Dixon with scores of 11-9, 11-8, 11-8.

The Bobcats will take the court for the for the third time in as many days as they welcome No. 21 Franklin and Marshall to the Bates Squash Center Sunday morning for a 10:00 a.m. contest.
