Abigail Zerbey both won their season-opening matches, but the No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team fell 7-2 Saturday at Brown University in the maiden outing for the Bobcats in 2022-23.
Bates (0-1) lost three of the nine matches by the score of 3-2 vs. the Bears (2-1).
Velez (Bronx, N.Y.), playing at the No. 6 position, bested Brown's Mina Bahadori in four games (10-12, 13-11, 11-3, 11-6). Zerbey (North Andover, Mass.) enjoyed a 3-0 sweep of Zoya Unni in the No. 7 slot with wins of 11-4, 12-10, and 11-7.

Erika Parker (San Salvador, El Salvador) won her first two games at the No. 3 position, only to see Brown's Danielle Benstock rally to win in five games (11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 10-12, 7-11).
First-year
Aasya Patel (Madhya Pradesh, India), playing her first collegiate match, fell in the No. 2 position to
Lily Seckendorf (11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 5-11, 3-11). Sophomore
Caroline Taggart (Concord, Mass.) in the No. 8 position, slipped in five sets to Anji Friedbauer (1-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 4-11).
The Bobcats look to bounce back Sunday when they visit No. 1 Trinity (Conn.) for a match that gets underway at 3pm.
