LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 25 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team was edged 6-3 by a tough opponent in No. 17 MIT on Friday afternoon, in the Bobcats' first of three home matches this weekend.
Bates (2-3) will host two NESCAC opponents on Saturday, No. 20 Williams at 11am and No. 27 Connecticut College at 4pm.
MIT (9-4), which won 8-1 at No. 24 Bowdoin on Thursday, took points at the No. 1 position as well as 4 through 8.
Sophomore Jesper Phillips (Moss, Norway) and junior Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) earned 3-0 sweeps at the second and third positions on the ladder, respectively. Phillips earned an 11-5, 11-5, 12-10 victory over Joe O'Connor, while Attia defeated Henry Martin 11-9, 11-9, 13-11. At No. 9, Bates first-year Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) came back from 2-0 down to win in five sets over Robert Williamson, 10-12, 6-11, 11-3, 11-7, 12-10.
Senior Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) fell in five sets to Eli Kramer at No. 4, while senior Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) fell by a 9-11, 15-13, 18-16, 11-8 score to Aman Sanger at No. 1. Senior Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also fell in four sets at the No. 5 position.
