LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 3 nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania proved too much for the No. 14 Bates College women's squash team in its home opener on Saturday, as the visiting Quakers swept every game but one in a 9-0 win at the newly improved Bates Squash Center.
The match was the first of the season for the visiting Quakers (1-0), while the Bobcats dropped to 3-2. It was the first match played at the improved and reconfigured Bates Squash Center, with its sparkling new sixth court and new spectator seating structure. The sixth court's glass walls allow for spectators to view the action from all sides.
Senior one-time All-American
Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) posted Bates' lone point in a highly competitive match at the No. 1 position on the ladder, as she fell by an 11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8 score to 2014 First Team All-American Anaka Alankamony.
The powerhouse Quakers have the luxury of fielding 2014 All-Americans at the third, fifth and sixth positions on their ladder -- respectively, Yan Xin Tan, Michelle Wong and Haidi Lala, all of whom defeated their Bates counterparts in straight games. First-years Melissa Alves and Michelle Alves made impressive debuts at the second and fourth positions, respectively, coasting to 3-0 wins over Bates senior captains
Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 and
Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.) at No. 4.
Bates next hosts NESCAC and in-state rival Bowdoin on Dec. 3 at 6pm.
