HADLEY, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team made some history on Thursday, as five Bobcats earned All-NESCAC honors. This matches the program record for All-NESCAC selections set back in 2010.
Senior infielder
Gibby Sullivan and junior captain outfielder
Keagan Ryan are both first team All-NESCAC, while sophomore infielder
John Federico, senior outfielder
Jack Margiloff, and senior starting pitcher
John Tully were all named second team All-NESCAC, as voted upon by the New England Small College Athletic Conference's head baseball coaches.
This the first career All-NESCAC selection for each of the five Bobcats honored.
Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) broke the Bates record for RBIs in one season with a NESCAC-leading 46. He started all 30 games and played the vast majority of the year at third base for the Bobcats, finishing with a batting average of .336 and an OPS of .925.
Ryan (Salem, N.H.) ranks second in all of NCAA Division III in stolen bases per game and his 38 steals in 38 attempts are the most in the country by any player who hasn't gotten caught. He smashed the Bates record for stolen bases in one season and finished the year ranking second in the NESCAC in on-base percentage at .507. His 1.207 OPS (On-Base + Slugging) is tied for seventh in the conference and he is sixth in batting average at .381. Ryan's 47 runs scored is a new Bates record and is tied for second-most this season in the conference. He did all this while playing an outstanding center field for Bates, finishing with four assists while making just one error.
Federico (Durham, N.H.) had a breakthrough sophomore season for the Bobcats, hitting .321 (34-106) while starting all 30 games at shortstop. He stole 13 bases in 14 attempts in his first full year as a starter for Bates.
Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.) slashed .369/.482/.505 in a monster senior campaign, tallying more hits this season (41) than he did in his previous three injury-shortened years combined (38) at Bates. He stole 27 bases on the season, which is the second-most all-time behind Bates record-holder Ryan. Margiloff also drew a team-high 22 walks while starting all 30 games in the outfield.
Tully (Framingham, Mass.) posted a 6-3 record with a 2.38 ERA on the season. He delivered seven quality starts (6-plus innings, three or fewer earned runs) in his nine outings on the year. Tully walked only 12 batters in 53 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .244 batting average.
The Bobcats posted a 20-win season (20-10) for the fifth time and finished with their highest winning percentage (.667) since 2010. Their 10-1 start to the year was the best in program history.
