GREENE, Maine -- The Bates rowing teams hosted Middlebury, Connecticut College, and Bowdoin for a round robin day of races Sunday on the Androscoggin River. Bates went undefeated on the day in the first of three home regattas this spring for the Bobcats at the Traquina Boathouse. 

The Bates men's first varsity eight got the day started with a race against the Middlebury 1V, as both crews dealt with heavy rain. Led by junior coxswain Darien Chiang (Quincy, Mass.) and senior captain stroke seat Luke Desmaison (New York City), the Bobcats raced to the finish in the 2K race in 5:53.0. The Panthers finished second to the Bobcats in 5:55.0. 

Sophomore coxswain Leah Brody (Larchmont, N.Y.) and sophomore stroke seat Virginia Adams (Hanover, N.H.) led the women's first varsity eight to a victory over the Panthers as well, crossing the finish line in 6:34.6. Middlebury kept things close, recording a time of 6:35.9. 

With both varsity eights recording victories, the 2Vs followed with a pair of wins as well. Led by senior coxswain Micah Shimizu (Batavia, Ill.) and first-year stroke seat Bryce Ahn (Bedford, N.H.), the Bates men's 2V raced to the finish in 6:02.6, winning by open water as Middlebury crossed the finish line in 6:14.7. 

The women's second varsity eight took to the water next and sophomore coxswain Shoshana Levy (Arlington, Va.) along with sophomore stroke seat Mia Senturk (Dublin, Ireland) led Bates to an easy win. The Bobcats turned in a time of 6:59.0 to Middlebury's 7:09.0.

More open water wins followed. Led by sophomore coxswain Sara Maquera (Glenview, Ill.) and junior stroke seat Finian Guinney (Seattle), the men's third varsity eight won their race in 6:16.4, as Middlebury finished in 6:27.6. 

First-year coxswain Sophie Shaw (Great Barrington, Mass.) and sophomore stroke seat Evie Fox (Dallas, Texas) led the Bates third varsity eight to victory over the Bobcat 4V, Middlebury, and Bowdoin in the final women's race of the morning for the Bobcats. The 3V crossed the finish line in 7:06.0 while the 4V took second in 7:14.0. Both boats won by open water over the Panthers (7:22.0) and Polar Bears (7:54.0).

While the women's team only had one round of racing, the men's team continued a long day on the water with additional races, including a pair of fours getting to take on Connecticut College. Coxed by sophomore Hannah Daher (Westwood, Mass.) and stroked by sophomore Louis Consigli (Milford, Mass.), the Bates men's 'B' four won the race in 7:10.8, winning by open water over the 'A' four (7:18.9), which in turn had no issue out-racing the Camel varsity four (7:34.5).

In their second race of the day, the men's first varsity eight won again, recording a time of 5:55.8 to Conn. College's 6:23.2. The second varsity eight did the same, winning easily over the Camels by a count of 6:13.1 to 6:51.9. 

Led by sophomore coxswain Benji Cao (Sharon, Mass.) and first-year stroke seat Solomon Kayobotsi (Kigali, Rwanda), the Bates men's fourth varsity eight rounded out the day with a win over Middlebury, recording a time of 6:42.6 to the Panthers' 6:48.4.

The Bobcats return to the Traquina Boathouse this Saturday to host MIT before the President's Cup Regatta against Bowdoin and Colby the following day.
