Men's 200 medley relay breaks NCAA Division III record as Bates wins two more NESCAC titles

The Bobcats set a new national standard of 1:25.57

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates men's 200-yard medley relay team dominated the field and broke the NCAA Division III record in the event as the Bobcats captured two more conference titles Saturday on the penultimate day of the NESCAC Championships.

Saturday Highlights
  • Junior Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), senior captain Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.), and senior captain Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) raced to the finish of the 200-yard medley relay in an NCAA Division III record time of 1:25.57, breaking the previous mark of 1:25.85 set in 2023 by a team from Emory University. The Bobcats finished more than two seconds ahead of their next-closest competition on Saturday to win the NESCAC title in the event for the first time in program history.
  • Somridhivej broke the NESCAC record in the 100-yard breaststroke, successfully defending his conference title from a year ago with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 51.85 seconds in the championship final.
  • Junior John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) broke his own school record in the 200-yard freestyle, earning All-NESCAC honors with a second-place finish in the championship final. Weigel raced to the finish in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:37.51.
  • Johnson was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, earning All-NESCAC honors and recording an NCAA 'B' Cut time of 48.36 seconds after recording a prelims time of 47.86 seconds.

Cory recorded the fastest time in the field in the prelims, racing to the finish in 47.51 seconds to break his own Bates record in the event. He took fifth in the championship final in 48.72 seconds.
  • The Bobcats showed off their depth in the 200-yard medley relay, as the 'B' team of sophomore Zach White (Santa Barbara, Calif.), junior Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine), junior Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and senior Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) recorded an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:29.45, easily the fastest time among the 'B' teams in the field and faster than six 'A' teams.
  • Katz won the consolation final of the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.39 seconds.
The Bobcats sit in fifth place overall as a team with 788 points with one day remaining. They are just eight points behind Connecticut College (796) with a chance to chase down third-place Amherst (894 points) as well.
