MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates swimming and diving program battled a pair of ranked Tufts teams in a dual meet on Saturday, with the men's team breaking a pair of pool records in a 172.5-97.5 loss to the No. 12 nationally ranked Jumbos and junior
Sarah Palmer winning again for the women's team in a 178-90 loss to No. 9 Tufts.
Men's Highlights
- Junior Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), senior captain Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), senior captain Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.), and junior John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) teamed up to break the Tufts pool record with their winning time of 3:19.46 in the 400-yard medley relay, out-touching Tufts by the slimmest of margins as the Jumbos 'A' team finished the race in 3:19.48.
- Sophomore Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.) led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 50-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 25.92 seconds to set a new pool record. Junior Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine) was the runner-up in 26.06 seconds and senior Kailer Tom (Daly City, Calif.) took third in 26.36 seconds.
- Johnson won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 23.85 seconds and also grabbed first place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.55.
- Cory won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.21 seconds.
- Somridhivej was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:03.01.
- Oppenheim was the runner-up in the 50-yard butterfly in 22.86 seconds.
- Weigel was the runner-up in the 200-yard IM in 1:56.55.
Women's Highlights
- Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.12 and was the runner-up in the 50-yard breaststroke in 29.97 seconds.
- First-year Lily Dunn (New Canaan, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 27.86 seconds. She took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.88 seconds.
- Sophomore Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) took third in the 50 back in 27.95 seconds.
- First-year Katherine Reed (Wenham, Mass.) took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.38 and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.36 seconds.
- First-year Grace Knight-Meister (Fort Collins, Colo.) debuted in the 500-yard freestyle with an impressive time of 5:19.74, earning nine points for the Bobcats.
- Senior McKayla Kendall (Bangor, Maine) scored nine points for the Bobcats in the 50-yard butterfly, posting the third-fastest time at the meet with her mark of 26.52 seconds.

Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) teamed up for the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay, placing third in 1:30.87.
The Bobcats are back in action for Senior Night at Tarbell Pool on Friday, Jan. 30 when they host the University of New England and Maine Maritime Academy at 6 p.m.
