CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- First-year
Regan Clute continued her impressive debut weekend, finishing 10th in the giant slalom to propel the Bates women's alpine skiing team to a fourth-place showing in the event Saturday at the Colby Carnival.
Clute (Tahoe City, Calif.) raced down Sugarloaf Mountain in a two-run combined time of 2:16.89, good for 10th out of 81 competitors and 31 carnival points. She also picked up 26 NCAA points for her efforts. But the rookie wasn't the only one impressing on Saturday. Junior
Juliette Hoder (Stowe, Vt.) turned in the best performance of her career in the giant slalom, taking 13th place with a two-run combined time of 2:17.05. Hoder earned 29 carnival points and 20 NCAA points. First-year
Sydney Kuder (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for Bates in 25th place with her two-run combined time of 2:20.42, good for 19 carnival points and six NCAA points.
With their 79 carnival points, the Bates women finished a solid fourth out of 13 schools in the GS, 15 points ahead of fifth-place Saint Michael's College and 22 points ahead of powerhouse University of Vermont.
Only three skiers can score carnival points for each team, but Bates sophomore captain
Helena Jankovic (Pittsfield, Mass.) deserves a mention as well, as she finished right behind Kuder in 26th place with a two-run combined time of 2:20.64. The top-30 performance earned Jankovic five NCAA points.
On the men's side, sophomore
Evan Gramas (Stowe, Vt.) led the way for Bates in 33rd place with a two-run combined time of 2:14.85, earning 15 carnival points. Classmates
Stanley Andrie (Vail, Colo.) and
Zac Bower (Truckee, Calif.) rounded out the scoring in 39th (2:15.32) and 42nd (2:17.11) place, earning 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Bates sits in 8th place overall through the alpine skiing portion of the Colby Carnival with 192 points, just one point behind seventh-place Williams.
The alpine skiing teams return to action this Thursday and Friday when they head to Whiteface Mountain for the St. Lawrence Carnival.
