NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore
Seneca Moore broke the Bates men's track and field record in the 110-meter hurdles to highlight the New England Division III Outdoor Championships as the Bobcats took sixth place out of 36 schools Friday and Saturday at Nitchman Track.
Bates tallied 49.5 points, the fourth most among NESCAC schools and ahead of rivals Colby (34 points) and Bowdoin (31 points).
Meet Highlights
- Moore (Lansing, Mich.) made the final of the 110-meter hurdles with his prelims time of 14.85 seconds, sixth in the field. Then he really turned on the jets, racing to victory in the final in 14.54 seconds. His winning time breaks the previous Bates record of 14.68 seconds, set by Jarret McKallagat '14 in 2014, and ranks 32nd in the country this season.
- First-year Ryan Glaser (Rockport, Maine) took third in the hammer throw with a personal-record heave of 171-7 (52.29m).
- Junior Carson Moellering (Natick, Mass.) placed third in the decathlon with a personal-record 5,673 points. He set personal records in the long jump (19-9.75), the high jump (6-05), the 400 meters (53.02 seconds), the 110-meter hurdles (17.44 seconds), and the discus (103-10) along the way.
- Sophomore Nikhil Chavda (Nottingham, N.H.) grabbed fifth in the 10,000 meters in a personal-record time of 32:27.71.
- Sophomores Daniel Cassata (Annandale, Va.) and Liam Thomson (Arlington, Va.) took fifth and sixth respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Cassata clocking in at 9:48.42 and Thomson at 9:49.08.
- Sophomore Ryan Harding (Wellesley, Mass.) won his section and placed sixth overall in the 400 meters in a personal-record time of 49.06 seconds, good for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Senior Calvin Capelle (Laguna Beach, Calif.) took sixth in the 800 meters in a personal-record time of 1:54.46.
- The Bates 4x100 relay team of sophomore Evan Berthiaume (East Greenwich, R.I.), senior captain Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), Harding, and senior captain Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.) tied with the host Coast Guard Academy for fifth place in 42.16 seconds, the fifth-fastest mark in Bates history.
- First-year Nick Nicolazzo IV (Wellesley, Mass.) placed eighth in the long jump with a personal-record leap of 22-1 (6.73m), good for fifth on the Bates all-time performance list and ninth in the triple jump at 44-9 (13.64m), enough for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list.
The Bobcats head to Williams College next Friday and Saturday for the Farley Inter Regional.
