CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bates men's tennis team visited No. 25 MIT on Wednesday afternoon, securing a pair of doubles victories, along with a win at No. 6 singles, before ultimately falling 5-2 in non-conference action.
The Bobcats (3-7) came out strong in doubles play, earning the first point of the match with victories at the top two positions.
Theo Sardain and
Phillippe Kosyagin edged MIT's SangHyuk Im and Grant Gallagher in a tiebreaker, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2,
Ben Adey and
Evangelo Kapothanasis controlled play in a 6-3 win over Joseph Li and Adam Sun. MIT salvaged a win at No. 3 doubles, as Ryan Xiao and Shrish Choudhary topped Bates'
Eric Diop and
Tylan Ozkuzey, 6-4.
Despite the early momentum, the Engineers (3-3) responded in singles play, winning five of the six matches. Bates' lone singles victory came from
James Sacco at No. 6, as he battled to a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 win over Jeremy Yu. Kosyagin (No. 1), Sardain (No. 2), Diop (No. 3), Adey (No. 4), and Ozkuzey (No. 5) all fell in straight sets as MIT sealed the team win.
Bates returns to action this Saturday, continuing its road trip with a 10:00 a.m. non-conference tilt No. 39 Skidmore.
