LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates baseball team's doubleheader with rival Bowdoin was suspended due to poor field conditions thanks to a mid-afternoon rainstorm Saturday at Leahey Field.
The Bobcats led 3-0 with a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the third when the rain became too intense to continue play. The game will resume at a to-be-determined date with sophomore
Gibby Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) facing an 0-1 count and junior
Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) at first base.
Bates got off to a strong start in the contest, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second against Bowdoin starter Luca McKerley Coronado. With one out, senior
Noah Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) singled to center. Junior
Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) followed with his first home run of the season, a shot out to left-center that put Bates up 2-0. Then with two away, first-year
Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) got hit by a pitch. He promptly stole second base and senior
Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) singled Ryan home for a 3-0 lead.
Senior starting pitcher
Sam Hough (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) was at the top of his game for the Bobcats on Saturday, retiring all nine batters he faced through three innings. He struck out three batters along the way.
Bates is scheduled to return to action next Saturday when the Bobcats host Emerson at 1:00 pm. Stick with gobatesbobcats.com for all the latest schedule updates.
