LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College hosted its annual Wallach Invitational this weekend as players from Colby College, Trinity College, and the Bobcats squared off over the two-day event in the Wallach Tennis Center.
Aaron Ramos (Sr.) shined in the "B" singles draw by advancing to the semifinals. The Bobcat tandem of
Phillippe Kosyagin (So.) and
Theo Sardain (Jr.) also moved on to the semifinal round in the doubles bracket.
Ramos opened Saturday action with a 6-3, 6-3 win vs. Trinity's Bud Fisher in the round of 16. The Englewood, N.J. native then ousted Sriram Das of Colby with a comeback score of 0-6, 7-6(5), 11-9 to earn a place in Sunday's semifinals vs. Marcus Carlsson (Trinity). Carlsson proceeded to defeat Ramos (7-6, 6-1) before going on to win the bracket with a 6-4, 0-6, 10-5 triumph over Colby's James Bogdanovic 6-4, 0-6, 10-5.
In doubles competition, Kosyagin and Sardain enjoyed a first-round bye before advancing to the semifinals with an 8-1 defeat of Trinity's Axel Edstrom and Luca Garbati. The Bates duo would then fall to Paul Dandler and Diego Sosa, 8-5, as the Colby pair advanced to the finals, ultimately losing to teammates James Bogdanovic and Jason Daly (8-5).
The Bobcat tandem of
Evangelo Kapothanasis and
Will Marshall posted a round of 16 win of 8-7 (4) vs. Carlsson and Jack Ginter (Trinity).
Eric Diop and
Tylan Ozkuzey, both first-years, defeated Trinity's Brandon Felcher and Pierce Rutledge, 8-7(3), in their first-round meeting.
Ben Adey and
Nicolas Ozer teamed up for an 8-4 win over Fisher and Keyon'Dre Clarke of Trinity, 8-4.
Adey and Diop also locked down victories in their respective "A" singles openers. Adey outlasted Sosa from Colby (6-3, 3-6, 10-8) while Diop dismissed Trinity's Rutledge, 3-6, 7-6(3), 10-8.
The event concludes the fall campaign for the Bobcats. Bates will return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Orlando, Fla. vs. Rollins College.
