CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Senior captains
Cal Schrupp and
Olivia Cuneo paced the Bates Nordic skiing teams Friday in the 1.3K classical technique sprint races at the UVM Carnival, held at Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
On the first day of the first carnival of the season, Schrupp (Gilford, N.H.) led the way for the men's team, qualifying for the quarterfinals with a qualifier time of 3:20.95. Then he raced to the finish in 3:19.53 in quarterfinal number five, just missing out on a top-12 semifinal appearance. He finished 15th place overall out of 93 competitors, good for 25 carnival points and 18 NCAA points.
First-year
Eske Roennau (Snowmass Village, Colo.) turned in an impressive collegiate debut, earning a spot in the quarterfinals as well with his qualifier time of 3:23.86. He turned in a time of 3:27.84 in the quarters, good for 26th place overall, which earned the Bobcats 17 carnival points. Roennau picked up seven NCAA points for his top-30 finish.
Junior
Mathias Boudreau-Golfman (Londonderry, Vt.) returned to his home state and picked up a top-30 finish as well, taking 28th overall with a qualifier time of 3:25.54 and a quarterfinals time of 3:31.92, good for 16 carnival points and six NCAA points.
On the women's side, Cuneo (St. George, Vt.) took 26th out of 99 competitors, advancing to the quarterfinals with a qualifying time of 3:59.29, and trimming seven seconds off that in the quarters (3:52.92), earning 20 carnival points and nine NCAA points.
Senior
Rebecca Feist (Fairlee, Vt.) and first-year
Rosalie Brown (Burlington, Vt.) rounded out the scoring for the Bobcats in 44th and 62nd place respectively.
Combined, the Bates men's and women's teams tallied 97 carnival points, good for ninth place through day one of the UVM Carnival. Action resumes Saturday at 10am when the Bobcats compete in the 10K freestyle race.
