TROY, N.Y. -- The Bates men's track and field team took on RPI and Tufts in a tri-meet Saturday, winning six events in the second outdoor meet of the season.
For the second straight week, the Bobcats put together an impressive 4x100 relay team. Senior
Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.), sophomore
Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), senior
Robby Griffin (Norwell, Mass.), and senior captain
Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) won the race in 42.51 seconds, the fourth fastest time in Bates history.Â
Meanwhile, Shen won the 100-meter dash in 11.02 seconds, the ninth fastest time in Bates history.Â
In the 1,500 meters, junior
Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) won the race in a personal record time of 3:56.79. Farrington is off to a strong start in the outdoor season, as he won the 5K with a PR last week at the Bates Quad Meet.
Senior captain
Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) was responsible for the other three wins on the day for Bates. He prevailed in the shot put with a top throw of 49-4.5 (15.05m), the hammer with a top throw of 175-5 (53.48m), and the javelin with a top effort of 176-0 (53.65m). Byrne placed second in the discus with a top heave of 151-3 (46.10m).Â
Senior
Luke Urribarri (East Sandwich, Mass.) placed runner-up to Byrne in the javelin with a personal record toss of 169-9 (51.73m). Junior
James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.) had a big day as well, setting personal records and taking third place in both the discus (140-11 / 42.96m) and the hammer throw (153-6 / 46.78m).Â
Bates is back in action at Connecticut College this Friday and Saturday for the Silfen Invitational.Â
