BOSTON -- Bates men's track and field senior captain
Liam Byrne won the weight throw and the shot put, highlighting Middlebury's New England Small College Invite, held Sunday at the TRACK at new balance.
Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) turned in a top distance of 58-07.25 (17.86m) on his third attempt, a new personal best in the 35-pound weight throw, on his way to victory. Juniors
James Guinee (Topsfield, Mass.) and
Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) took fifth (51-7.75) and seventh (49-5) respectively.
Byrne and Goff delivered a 1-2 finish for Bates in the shot put, with Byrne's winning throw of 49-8.50 (15.15m) coming on his final attempt. Goff's runner-up throw of 48-9.50 (14.87m) came on his first attempt.
Bates delivered a number of other top-8 performances at the non-scoring meet:
- Junior Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) finished fifth in the mile in 4:16.62.
- First-year Matthew Fox (Windham, Maine) tied senior captain Wyatt Bates (Yarmouth, Maine) for sixth in the high jump, with both Bobcats clearing the bar at 5-10.75 (1.80m).
- Senior Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) placed seventh in the 3,000 meters in 8:32.35, good for ninth on the Bates all-time performance list.
- Senior Derek Shen (Bellevue, Wash.) finished seventh in the 60-meter dash in 7.11 seconds.
The Bobcats return to action this Saturday at 12pm when Bates hosts the Maine State Meet at Merrill Gymnasium.
