Men's Cross Country Preview: Bobcats Look to Carry Momentum of Last Year's Success into Fall Campaign

LEWISTON, Maine – Coming off a campaign that witnessed a fourth-place team finish at the NCAA Division III East Regional Meet, while crowning four Bobcats as All-Region selections in the process, the Bates men's cross country program looks to parlay that success into a NESCAC crown in 2022.

Danny Feldman takes the reins of the Bates men's and women's cross country squads, the first time in program history that both teams will report to the same head coach.

"As the preseason comes to its conclusion, we recognize that the merging of the program makes us believe even more is possible," Feldman said. "The team synergy and cohesion has exceeded our expectations and the level of buy-in makes us confident that we can push the envelope in training and competition. We have significant depth on both sides and feel like everyone is on board to commit to the work required to be a national-level program."

Bates lost its top runner from last year, Jackson Donahue '22, to graduation, but the squad has plenty of talent to carry the torch this fall.

"The men's team is returning five of the seven Bobcats that competed in the NCAA national meet last season," added Feldman. "We have significant depth as seniors Eli Boesch Dining (Concord, N.H.) and Ryan Smith (Westport, Conn.), along with juniors Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.), Sam Kartsonis (Harriton, Pa.), and Victor Kering (Eldoret, Kenya), are all back. We are excited to see who steps up to bolster our lineup come championship season. The region is incredibly deep, but there is no reason why we cannot contend."

Farrington, Kartsonis, and Smith dazzled to earn All-Region accolades last autumn while the addition of first-year harriers Henry Welch (Istanbul, Turkey) and Jackson Monz (North Logan, Utah) looks to enhance an already-talented lineup.

Boesch Dining, Farrington, and Smith will share the team captaincy for the garnet and white. Seniors Gabe Coffey (Bangor, Maine), Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.), Daniel McConnell (Califon, N.J.), Mack Reynolds (West Hartford, Conn.), and Clem Taylor-Roth (Juneau, Alaska) will be called upon to provide veteran leadership during what likely marks their final year on the roster.

Bates opens the season this Saturday by hosting the annual CBB Class Wave Races at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. The Bobcats will again host Sept. 17 with the running of the Bates Invitational, also at Pineland Farms.

The NESCAC Championships will be held Oct. 29 in Clinton, N.Y., followed by the NCAA Regionals in Brunswick, Maine on Nov. 12.

The NCAA Division III National Championship Meet takes place November 19 in East Lansing, Mich.
