Tess Coutu and sophomore
Bo Underhill both took 18th place in their respective slalom races to lead the Bates alpine skiing teams Friday at the UNH Carnival, which doubles as the NCAA East Regionals.
In the women's slalom, Coutu (Foster, R.I.) recorded a two-run combined time of 1:45.02 for her 18th place showing out of 80 collegiate skiers, earning 25 carnival points and 13 NCAA points. Senior captain
Sarah Gillis (Branford, Conn.) also scored for the Bates women, taking 37th place with a two-run combined time of 1:50.55, enough for 12 carnival points. First-year
Sequoia Anstine (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) rounded out the scoring in 42nd place, enough for 10 carnival points with her two-run combined time of 1:56.66.
On the men's side, Underhill (Newbury, N.H.) earned 24 carnival points and 14 NCAA points with his two-run combined time of 1:31.86, 18th out of 83 competitors. Senior captain
Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) also recorded a top 30 finish, tying for 26th with a two-run combined time of 1:34.65.
Combined the Bates alpine and Nordic skiing teams scored 172 points on Friday, putting them in 9th place out of 17 schools at the East Regionals with one day remaining.
The alpine skiing teams return to Mittersill-Cannon Mountain to compete in the giant slalom on Saturday. The women get started at 9am and the men go at 10:20.
