LYME, N.H. -- Sophomore
Bo Underhill led the Bates men's alpine skiing team to a sixth place showing in the slalom in a strong day overall for the Bobcats Saturday at the Dartmouth Carnival.
Underhill (Newbury, N.H.) placed 13th out of 71 men's skiers with a two-run combined time of 1.41.52, earning 29 carnival points and 20 NCAA points. Senior captain
Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) and first-year
Kyle Kagan (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) also landed in the top 30, with van Vuuren placing 27th in 1.45.74 and Kagan coming in 30th in 1.46.36.
Combined, the three Bates men earned 62 carnival points, only two points away from fifth place out of 14 EISA schools.
On the women's side, senior
Tess Coutu (Foster, R.I.) led the way, taking 24th place out of 72 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1.44.24 and earning 19 carnival points and seven NCAA points. Fellow senior
Daphne James (Sausalito, Calif.) finished her two runs in 1.46.34, placing 32nd to earn 13 carnival points. First-year
Sequoia Anstine (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) rounded out the scoring in 36th place with a two-run combined time of 1.47.54, earning 10 carnival points.
The Bates alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined for 410 carnival points, good for eighth out of 14 EISA schools. The skiing teams return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Middlebury Carnival.
