BOSTON, Mass. --
Liam Byrne kicked off the 2022-23 indoor track & field campaign on the right foot as the Bates College senior captain secured a second-place finish in the Weight Throw at Saturday's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, hosted by Boston University.
Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) was the runner-up in a field of 14 competitors, launching a mighty heave of 16.72 meters. The effort fell just short of Byrne's personal indoor record of 16.74 meters, established last February at the Bowdoin College Lynn Ruddy Invitational.
Fresh off respective All-Region selections during a highly-successful men's cross country season,
Eli Boesch Dining (Conord, N.H.) and
Ned Farrington (Jr.-Cohasset, Mass.) made their winter debuts for the Bobcats. Boesch-Dining recorded a time of 14:37.94 in the 5K while Farrington secured a mark of 8:29.19 (35th out of 73) in the 3K.
Boesch-Dining's time eclipses the senior's previous-best of 15:07.15 in the event, set in Feb. 2020 at Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The Bobcats will return to action as a full unit on Jan. 14 with an appearance in the MIT Tri-Meet (with Southern Maine) in Cambridge, Mass.
