Tess Coutu paced the Bates alpine skiing teams with top-15 performances in the slalom Saturday at the Saint Michael's Carnival.
Coutu (Foster, R.I.) and the Bates women turned in a strong performance as a team, placing fifth out of 14 teams with 65 points. Four Bobcat men placed in the top 30, with Coutu taking 14th place with a two-run combined time of 1:46.69. She earned 28 carnival points and 18 NCAA points.
Junior
Grace Schierwagen (North Hampton, Pa.) took 21st place with her two-run combined time of 1:48.92 and picked up 21 carnival points and 10 NCAA points. After her breakthrough performance in the giant slalom on Friday, first-year
Sequoia Anstine (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) had another solid day, finishing in 25th place with a two-run combined time of 1:50.75, good for 18 carnival points and six NCAA points.Â
Only the top three skiers from each team can record carnival points but the Bobcats also got a top-30 performance from senior captain
Sarah Gillis (Branford, Conn.), who earned four NCAA points with her 27th place finish on a two-run combined time of 1:51.44.
On the men's side, Underhill (Newbury, N.H.) ripped off the best carnival performance of his young career, taking 10th place with a two-run combined time of 1:34.87, four tenths of a second out of third. He earned Bates 30 carnival points and picked up 26 NCAA points.
Senior captain
Arie van Vuuren (Boulder, Colo.) just missed a top-30 showing, finishing 31st in 1:39.43, good for 14 carnival points.Â
The Bates alpine and Nordic teams combined for 370 carnival points, good for ninth out of 14 schools.
The Bobcats return to action on Feb. 4 and 5 when they compete in the UVM Carnival.Â
