LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior All-American
John Rex moved further up the storied ranks of Bates hammer throwers on Saturday, launching a personal-record throw of 191 feet and 6 inches to highlight Saturday's tri-meet with Bowdoin and Colby for the Bates men's track and field team.
Field events and the 10,000 meters took place at Bates, with track events taking place simultaneously at Bowdoin.Â
Competing on his home throwing circle, Rex (Andover, Mass.) moved up from 10th to ninth place, past Peter Goodrich '89, on Bates' All-American-studded all-time top 10 performance list in the event. Rex notched the new personal record on his second attempt of the day, and was eight centimeters shy of it on his third attempt (58.30 meters). His mark would put him in fourth place in this season's Division III national rankings at the start of the day.
Rex also won the shot put (46'2.75"), and was third in the discus (131'7").
Other highlights for the Bobcats included:
- Sophomore Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) won the discus throw (144'5") and the javelin throw (160'2"), and also took second in the shot put (45'1.5") and second in the hammer (155'9").
- Senior captain Elijah Coyne (Newtown, Pa.) posted a winning time of 58.64 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.
- Senior Zach Smith (Waterville, Maine) was second in the discus (132'4") and second in the javelin (156'2").
- First-year Jacob Goff (Scarborough, Maine) was third in the hammer (142'7"), third in the shot put (44'11") and fourth in the discus (121'6").
- Sophomore Robert Griffin (Norwell, Mass.) placed first among four runners in the 400 meters, at 52.24 seconds.
- Sophomore Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.) was second among 12 runners in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:01.34.
- First-year Joseph Visconti (Juno Beach, Fla.) posted a winning time of 10:13.53 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
- Junior Quinn Trent (Rumson, N.J.) won the high jump at 5'7.75".
- Junior Charlie Hansen (Washington, D.C.) won the pole vault, clearing 12'0".
- Junior Jackson Donahue (Princeton, N.J.) was third among 14 runners in the 1,500 meters (15:40.04).
- Senior Ryan Giunta (Andover, Mass.) was third in the long jump (19'9").
- Sophomore Gabe Coffey (Bangor, Maine) came in fourth place in the 1,500 meters (4:09.81).
- Bates nipped Colby by 0.5 seconds in the 4x400 relay, with Griffin, senior captain Miles Nabritt (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior Garrett Evans (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and Glover finishing in 3:30.12.
Bates will next compete at the Tufts Invitational, Saturday May 8 at 1pm.
