WATERVILLE, Maine -- The first session of the Maine State Collegiate Swimming and Diving Meet Friday night at Colby ended with the Bates women in first place among six teams, while the Bates men were in third behind Bowdoin and Colby.
The Bates women scored 370 points Friday; they're followed in team scoring by Colby (333.50), Bowdoin (292.50) and the University of Maine (169). On the men's side, Colby has 397 points, followed by Bowdoin (371), Bates (328) and the University of Maine (67).
Bates claimed first place in three of 15 events on Friday:
- Junior Abigail Gibbons (Westtown, N.Y.), sophomore Marjorie McLeod (Durham, Maine), first-year Sophia Carrai (Eugene, Ore.) and first-year Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a meet record time of 1:35.41.
- Senior Maya Reynoso Williams (Somerville, Mass.) set a pool record in the 500 yard freestyle, winning in 5:04.38.
- Junior Edmond Giang (Wayland, Mass.) set a pool record in the 50 yard butterfly, winning in a personal-best 22.74 seconds.
The meet resumes at 10am Saturday at Colby, with a final session starting at 5:30pm.
