Maine natives Barber, Woods again lead Nordic teams on second day of Bates Carnival

RUMFORD, Maine -- Junior Tucker Barber and senior Kaelyn Woods were the leaders of the Bates men's and women's Nordic skiing teams for the second day in a row on Saturday at the Bates Carnival, as Bates scored 10th in the men's 10K freestyle race and ninth in the women's 5K freestyle.

A day after placing 23rd to lead Bates in the men's 20K classical technique race, Barber (Wilton, Maine) placed 51st out of 83 competitors with a time of 25:59.6 to again lead the Bobcats. Sophomore Henry Raff (Hailey, Idaho) came second for Bates for the second straight day, taking a 54th-place finish (26:06.8), while first-year Cal Schrupp (Gilford, N.H.) completed the team's scoring in 63rd place (26:42.3).

Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) paced the women's squad with a 31st-place finish among 81 women with a time of 14:06.5. Junior Maya Seckinger (Winthrop, Wash.) came in 36th place (14:26.0) and junior Zoe McKinney (North Conway, N.H.) placed 58th (15:08.6) to complete the team's scoring.

Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams combined to place seventh out of 14 teams at the Bates Carnival, with 421 carnival points. Middlebury edged Vermont for first place at the carnival, 850-848.

Next up on the EISA carnival schedule is the Williams Carnival, with Nordic races held at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vt., Feb. 14-15.
