Kaelyn Woods finished 19th out of 62 women and sophomore
Henry Raff placed 34th out of 65 men to pace the Bates Nordic skiing teams in the classical technique races Saturday at the Middlebury Carnival, which doubles as the NCAA East Regional.
Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) raced to the finish in the 15K classic in 49:20.0, earning 25 carnival points and 12 NCAA points. Junior Maya Seckinger (Winthrop, Wash.) just missed a top-30 finish of her own, placing 31st with a time of 51:06.8, good for 17 carnival points. First-year Sarah Gallagher (Dummerston, Vt.) rounded out the scoring for the Bobcat women, earning 13 carnival points with a 39th place finish. She completed the course in 52:45.9.
The women combined for 55 carnival points, good for eighth place.
On the men's side, Raff (Hailey, Idaho) raced to the finish in the 20K classic in 56:59.0, earning 14 carnival points. Junior Tucker Barber (Wilton, Maine) finished 37th with a time of 57:38.8, good for 13 carnival points. And junior captain Carter Ros (Hailey, Idaho) rounded out the scoring in 47th place, earning 10 carnival points.
The men combined for 37 carnival points, good for 10th place.
The Bates Nordic skiing teams combined with the alpine teams to score 381 points over the course of the two-day NCAA East Regional, good for 8th placed out of 20 schools competing. Bates finished 11 points ahead of ninth-place Harvard.
This marks the final carnival of the season for the Bates Nordic skiing teams. Select Bobcats may earn a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships, taking place March 12 and 14 at the Crosscut Mountain Sports Center in Bozeman, Montana.
