Kaelyn Woods finished in 19th place out of 85 competitors, leading the Bates College women's Nordic skiing team in the 10k classic race at the Williams Carnival which was moved to Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y., due to snow conditions. Junior captain
Carter Ros led the men's team with a 57th place finish in a field of 84 skiers.
Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) earned 15 NCAA points and 25 carnival points with her team-leading finish. She recorded a time of 29:44.5. Junior Maya Seckinger (Winthrop, Wash.) was the next Bobcat finisher in 35th place (30:27.0), logging 17 carnival points and one NCAA point. Senior Annie Blakslee (Edwards, Colo.) rounded out the team scoring for Bates on day one, earning nine carnival points with a 67th place finish (32:29.9). Sophomore Olivia Skillings (Portland, Maine) was close behind in 72nd (32:52.9), and first-year Emma Blakslee (Edwards, Colo.) followed in 75th (33:39.1).
Ros (Hailey, Idaho) logged a time of 26:52.5 to earn nine carnival points. Junior Tucker Barber (Wilton, Maine) was two places behind in 59th (27:02.1). First-year Zander Martin (York, Maine) finished in 67th place crossing the finish line in 27:26.7 to complete the team scoring. Sophomore Henry Raff (Hailey, Idaho) was just behind Martin in 68th place (27:27.0).
The Bates women scored the eighth most carnival points among 15 teams in the event (51), while the Bates men were 11th with 24.
The Williams Carnival will continue Saturday morning with freestyle races in Lake Placid, N.Y.
