No. 19 women's squash splits a pair of matches at NESCAC Championships

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team lost a tight 5-4 match to No. 15 Middlebury in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals on Saturday before bouncing back to defeat No. 21 Wesleyan 7-2 in the consolation bracket. 

The Bobcats (9-7) will take on No. 17 Tufts in the fifth place match Sunday at 11:00 a.m. 

Three Bobcats posted perfect 2-0 records on the day.

Junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) swept Middlebury's Alexa Comai 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-8) in the morning and took down Wesleyan's Josie Ross 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-9) in the afternoon at the No. 3 position. 

Sophomore captain Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) improved her personal record to 11-1 on the season with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 12-10) win over Middlebury's Anne Glassie and a 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-3) win over Wesleyan's Tatum Leclair at the No. 4 position. 

First-year Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) rallied to win 3-1 (12-14, 11-3, 11-9, 11-9) at the No. 5 position over Middlebury's Natalie Madden. Then she turned in a dominating performance in a remarkable 3-0 (11-0, 11-0, 11-0) win over Wesleyan's Ali Imperiale in the afternoon. 

Sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) took down the Panthers' Beatrijs Kuijpers 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) at the No. 1 position. But Middlebury swept four matches and secured the 5-4 victory over Bates with a clutch 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6 ) win by Virginia Schaus at the No. 6 position. Schaus rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the match. 

In the consolation match against Wesleyan, junior captain Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) earned a 3-1 (11-4, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3) victory over Ananya Vir at the No. 2 position. After her heartbreaking loss at the No. 6 position in the morning, first-year Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bounced back to win 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-2) over Ale Lampietti in the afternoon.

Juniors Molly Brooks (Charlottesville, Va.) and Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) won against Wesleyan as well at the No. 7 and 9 positions respectively. Brooks held off the Cardinals' Sarah Clothier by a count of 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7) and Bull swept Ashley Morse 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-4).
