Pair of first-years shine in freestyle sprints for Nordic skiing at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- First-years Graham Houtsma and Kaelyn Woods starred for the Bates men's and women's Nordic skiing teams respectively on day one of the UVM Carnival Friday at the Trapps Nordic Center. 

Houtsma (Aspen, Colo.) finished in 12th place out of 84 skiers in the men's freestyle sprint. He earned 30 carnival points for the Bobcats. Meanwhile Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) led all Bates women's skiers with a 25th place finish out of 87 finishers, good for 21 carnival points. 

The Bates men as a team finished seventh out of 13 teams while the women finished eighth out of 13 teams. Both squads earned 58 carnival points each.

Senior captain Halie Lange (Brattleboro, Vt.) finished just behind Woods in 28th place, good for 20 carnival points. Senior Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) rounded out the scoring for the women with a 35th place finish and 17 carnival points. 

For the men, junior Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) came in 36th place, earning 17 carnival points and senior co-captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) rounded out the scoring with 11 carnival points in a 46th place finish. 

The Nordic skiing teams combined with the alpine skiing teams sit in 9th out of 16 teams after day one at the UVM Carnival.

Both Nordic teams compete in a 10K Classic race on Saturday to wrap up action at the UVM Carnival.
