PRINCETON, N.J. -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team won four of the five matches at the top of the ladder but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to No. 11 Williams Saturday evening in the College Squash Association Team Championships Consolation Semifinals.
With the loss, Bates (14-6) will take on Middlebury in the 15th place match Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
On Saturday, first-year and first team All-NESCAC selection Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) improved her personal record to 16-4 on the year with a 3-1 (11-7, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6) victory over Nicole Friedman at the No. 1 position.
Sophomore and two-time first team All-NESCAC selection Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) bounced back from a tough first game to win 3-1 (2-11, 11-6, 11-4, 15-13) over Esther Baek at the No. 2 position.
The Bobcats also prevailed at the No. 4 and 5 positions. At the No. 5 position, senior co-captain Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.) knocked off Alyssa Ritchie 3-1 (11-4, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9). Meanwhile first-year Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) picked up a win when her opponent was forced to retire.
But the Ephs were able to pick up wins at the No. 6 through 9 positions as well as the No. 3 position pull out the victory. Bates improved on their regular season performance when they fell 7-2 to Williams.
