Men's Nordic finishes sixth in 20K Freestyle mass start at Bates Carnival

RUMFORD, Maine -- Junior Parker McDonald paced the Bates men's Nordic ski team for the second straight day, leading them to a sixth place finish out of 12 schools in the 20-kilometer mass start race Saturday at the Bates Carnival. 

The Bobcat men tallied 58 carnival points on Saturday, finishing three points ahead of seventh place Middlebury and three points behind fifth place St. Lawrence.

McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) finished in 18th place out of 68 collegiate skiers with a time of 54:20.1, good for 26 carnival points and 13 NCAA points.

Senior co-captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) supported McDonald with a 21st place finish thanks to a time of 54:38.6, good for 24 carnival points and 10 NCAA points. 

Fellow senior Nathan Moreau (Falmouth, Maine) rounded out the scoring for the men with a 46th place finish, earning the Bobcats eight carnival points. 

In the women's 15K freestyle mass start, senior Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) wrapped up her big carnival season with a 20th place finish. Her time of 47:48.9 paced the Bobcats. She earned 24 carnival points and 11 NCAA points. 

Fellow senior Sadie James (Avon, Maine) skied with Fiddler throughout the race and came in 22nd place with a time of 48:02.7, good for 22 carnival points and nine NCAA points.

First-year Kaelyn Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) rounded out the scoring for the women with a 33rd place finish, tallying 14 carnival points for the Bobcats.

The women finished eighth out of 12 teams with 60 carnival points, one point ahead of ninth place Bowdoin and three points behind seventh place St. Lawrence. 

The Nordic ski teams combined with the alpine ski teams to finish the Bates Carnival with 460 carnival points, good for seventh out of 16 schools.

Select Bates Nordic skiers will compete at the NCAA Championships March 9 and 11 at Jackson Ski Touring Center in Jackson, N.H.
