RIPTON, Vt. -- The Bates women's Nordic skiing team compiled 74 carnival points to finish in fourth place out of 12 schools in the classic sprint relay Saturday at the Middlebury Carnival.
Seniors Sadie James (Avon, Maine) and Laurel Fiddler (Crowley Lake, Calif.) teamed up to finish in 24:07.7, seventh fastest out of 34 pairs of collegiate skiers. They earned 45 carnival points for their efforts.
Meanwhile first-year Kaelyn Woods (New Gloucester, Maine) and senior captain Halie Lange (Brattleboro, Vt.) earned a 14th place finish with a time of 25:03.4, good for 29 carnival points.
The women's 74 carnival points placed them just six points behind third place Middlebury and three points ahead of fifth place Colby.
On the men's side, junior Parker McDonald (Wolcott, Colo.) and senior co-captain Max Millslagle (Bend, Ore.) came in 20th out of 33 teams of skiers to earn 22 carnival points with a time of 22:48.5.
First-years Forrest Hamilton (Shelburne, Vt.) and Graham Houtsma (Aspen, Colo.) picked up 18 carnival points for Bates with a 24th place finish.
The Bates Nordic skiing teams combined with the alpine skiing teams to finish with 351 carnival points, eighth place out of 15 schools at the Middlebury Carnival.
The skiing teams return home Friday, Feb. 24 to host the Bates Carnival which is doubling this year as the NCAA East Regional.
